Web design is always changing, not just according to aesthetic trends but also to evolving expectations for usability, navigation, and performance.

As you consider redesigning your own website, it can be helpful to know what’s trending in the web development world. Not all trends are created equal, of course, but there are a few current fashions that we really like.

9 Web Design Trends We Can Get Behind

1) Dark mode.

Dark mode web design can accomplish a couple of important things. For one, it helps reduce eye strain on the part of the viewer. But just as importantly, it provides a way to imbue a website with a brand’s chosen color palette, without sacrificing legibility.

2) Kinetic typography.

When we talk about kinetic typography, we’re basically talking about letters that include elements of animation and motion. Kinetic typography can provide visitors to your website with a dramatic welcome, or it can be used to draw attention to really important pieces of information.

3) Structured typography.

At the other end of the spectrum, we see more and more websites that use carefully structured typography (think all caps and strong, solid fonts) to convey a sense of stability. Following the disruptive nature of the pandemic, it’s understandable that so many website visitors would subconsciously crave this kind of thing.

4) Layering.

We’re also seeing a lot of websites that intermingle multiple layers of images, colors, shapes, and text. These different layers can add a sense of depth to the page, enticing the visitor to learn more about the story of your business or brand. Just make sure you select a designer with the right aesthetic eye to help you avoid clutter or confusion.

5) Minimalism.

Every day, we’re subject to an onslaught of images and other visual stimuli, whether on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. As a result, many website users actually find comfort in websites that strike a more minimalist post, relying on text alone to tell a powerful story. When done right, minimalism can certainly be stark, dramatic, and effective.

6) Inclusivity.

For business owners, it’s important to create a website that is accessible to all, including those who may have unique vision impairments or other needs. That’s something your web design team can help with. In fact, Woland Web has done a lot of great work helping our clients offer a rich assembly of accessibility options, creating sites that can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone.

7) Combining horizontal and vertical text.

Sites that blend horizontal and vertical text can sometimes create a sense of depth and dimension, delighting visitors who are tired of conventional aesthetics. Again, the trick here is to ensure that your content is still readable, never sacrificing function for formal experiments.

8) Broken grids.

Grids provide an elegant, logical way to present information to the end user. By breaking up grids, using dissimilar box sizes or non-linear layouts, you can deliver the ultimate combination of organization and intrigue.

9) Emotional design and storytelling.

Finally, we want to highlight the increased tendency of web designers to create narrative websites that tell the story of a brand in a linear and emotionally resonant way. This is where something like the Storybrand method, which we employ here at Woland Web, can be invaluable.
